This week in class we discussed asychronous communication. Which is a time delay between information delivered between 2 or more people. For example when a student sends a professor an email or another classmate an email there is a wait time for the response. In a normal face-to-face setting, a student can ask the teacher a question right away and can receive an answer however with an online class like this one the student must wait for a response until the teacher may get a hold of them.
I never thought of learning this way and didn't know it had a name. Even its relation to when I talk to my friends through text messaging or online I never thoguht of it this way. So far the information I've learned in class is opening my eyes up in a different way when viewing technology. I never knew there were all these components to different technology for instructional settings even though my minor in college was instructional technology. It's just very interesting to see that I've just touched the surface and theres all this information that we haven't even looked at yet.

I too did not know that there was a specific name for this type of learning. I am also very curious and interested to see what we will learn in this course. I definitely like human interaction that takes place face to face more than through the computer. I worry that as more and more activities that used to require human contact go on-line, that people will become less likely to leave their homes and explore the real world existing around them.
ReplyDeleteI didn't realize this type of learning had a specific name until fairly recently myself. Glad to hear we're all in the same boat! I look forward to learning together.
ReplyDeletegbickett- I totally know what you mean about people becoming less likely to leave their homes and live in the world around them. I've noticed in now when working at a summer day camp. The students don't know how to socialize as much with one another and just want to sit and be on their cell phones, ipods or nitendo ds'. They didn't want to play with one another or even play board games. I've noticed with my generation as well we are always so concerned with "staying connected" to social networking and cell phones people use them to hide behind and dond't know how to do anything in person anymore.
