I've been going through a couple of different articles recently and looking at twitter as a whole and it seems to be expanding then more than just a social network for microblogging. It's evolved into something bigger I feel. I see more and more people going to twitter to sometimes get their news "on the go". Yes I do follow CNN, Fox News, and other media outlets on twitter as well for "breaking news" but I would've never turned to them first for my news. I would turn on the television, read a newspaper or even go online to their websites before going to their twitter to retrieve breaking news information. I don't get why people would turn to twitter as technically a "news outlet"?? Maybe it's the newer generations who are doing so, but still.. I remember in a blog post I had in past talking about how twitter could "save your life" which could technically be the breaking news people use to learn new news because for example a tsunami could hit a small country and someone posts where they are right after it happens and that allows someone to find them but is news...
So I actually have a question to pose with this post...
Do yoiu think twitter more than just a "social network" ?
I think other opinions about this would be interesting..

I don't know what to call twitter because I have a hard time with it as a social network since its just people following what others are saying. LOL. I would definitely be hesitant to get my news from twitter. The reliability of the source would be an important factor to consider. I admit that I am a headline reader so the appeal of getting the most essential piece of news is there. I guess I just don't trust it enough yet to consider twitter much of anything at this point. I do not currently have an account with them.
ReplyDeleteI do not think of Twitter as more than just a social network but then again, I do not have an account. I do think that "headlines" of all kinds, including news, could be a good way to get tidbits of information and of course, I'm for any tool that may help save my life sometime.
ReplyDeleteHi Leah:
ReplyDeleteI agree with what Greg and Sue said. I do not believe that Twitter is more than a Social Network. I think it was two weeks ago that we had the class discussion about credible and reliable online sources and Twitter does not meet all the criteria.
I think that some people are turning to Twitter for their "news" because of ease and convenience. It is just like for some students, it is easier to start researching a topic via Google Search and Wikipedia as oppose to gping through a database search via Bird or some other traditional library.
I also do not have a Twitter account; however, I am on Facebook.

I also do not have a twitter account, but I would have to agree with everyone else and say that it is just a social network. Even in facebook you can follow news (at least local news), and get stories that are happening around you, but I think that since both of these sites are so heavily populated with people posting about their lives that in my opinion they are just forms of social networks.
ReplyDeleteMaybe in the future the sites may change a little especially if people begin to follow more and more news stations, but from my understanding and at least among my friends who have an account they signed up to follow their friends or celebrities and not the news.
Hey leah,
ReplyDeleteI feel like everyone above has said good things and i agree with the fact that it is just a social network but i think within there are factual things as well. Unfortunatley you dont know how credible they are, there is still information that some people can recieve. My coach actually the other day was talking about how he wanted to get more information and advertising about his camps out and he brought up the idea of twitter.
thanks all for your opinions.. I was just curious to see what everybody else thought about hte ideas...
