What is an electronic whiteboard?

This is a picture of a student using an electronic whiteboard in an educational setting during a lesson.

An electronic whiteboard is connected to your own  computer with a projector that projects the images from your computer screen to the whiteboard and then allows you to manipulate the images or whatever you have on the screen. They can be used in a variety different settings as well.

I have done a lot with electronic whiteboards during my undergrad or as we referred to them as smartboards. There are so many different uses for them and they are a lot of fun to incorporate into teaching because it gives something else to your lesson and allows the students to be able to participate more in the lesson being taught. We had them throughout my college and at the places I student taught. My professors like to incorporate them into their lessons and we were allowed to incorporate them for different presentations we did as well. Then at my placement the students loved being able to write all over a board and be able to drag items from one section to another section. I feel that they also completely enhance a lesson way more then a typical whiteboard because the graphics the program has and what you can do with it makes it visually appealing to the students and others who are apart of the lesson.

  1. I am eager to read your blog because IWB's were my first half topic. I am curious to see which direction you take it. It seems like you have plenty of experience with them both as a teacher and students. Enjoy this awesome topic.

  2. I'm looking forward to hearing more about this topic and your experiences. It seems like every K-12 classroom would benefit from one of these. I wonder what percentage of K-12 classrooms in our public school systems have these?

  4. Leah!
Hey friend I'm going to comment on your blog all the time because I love my IWB but mine isn't a smartboard it's a promethean board. One difference I noticed the first day between the two was you can't just touch the screen with the promethean you HAVE to use the pen. Also I have to calibrate my board more frequently then I had to with my smartboard.

  5. Leah, I'm looking forward to reading your blog posts about electronic whiteboards. It was interesting to hear about them from Greg's perspective; since you also have had teaching experiences with them, I am definitely interested in what you have to share. =)

  6. Hi Leah:

In reading your posting, one can see you have a lot of experience with electronic whiteboards. The first time that I became aware of them was when I started taking online classes at SU via the Blackboard platform. I think this is a very interesting project and I look forward to reading future postings.

  7. Leah-

I think whiteboards are very handy to have in classroom to keep the students engaged, but I often feel as though teachers don't use them to their full advantage because they aren't aware of everything that can be done on a whiteboard. I just sat in on a meeting the other day where someone was getting trained on how to use a whiteboard and there are really endless opportunities when using one!
