I didn't realize all the different types of electronic whiteboards. The only one I am use to working with is a smartboard however Ashley Zaremba in her classroom has informed me she has a promethean board. I've also seen online a whiteboard called a mimio. So that got me curious what was different between each of them and to do some research.
Mimio website about the different mimio tools
I thought mimio was a brand of interactive whiteboard but it is so much more. there are a bumch of different technological tools they have for teachers and students to use to incorporate technology into their teaching. They have everything from forms of clickers to use throughout their presentations to check in with students, a tablet like an ipad where teachers can control their interacctive whiteboard from anywhere within the room. Also they have whitebaord markers that are in color that record what you write and can be printable into notes with diagrams and everything. This interactive whiteboard is very interesting and if your district can afford every tool for the whiteboard it would be VERY beneficial to teaching and make student laerning more interesting.
Promethean website about promethean boards and other information
All it is, is exactly what an interactive whiteboard is. A whiteboard that connects to your computer. The board allows you to surf the internet, write on it with special whiteboard markers, drag in pictures, video clips, etc from outside and interent sources. Also clickeres can be incorporated into the learning with this device as well.
Smartboard website with other smart technolgoies and about smartboard
As before it's the same however they also have more technologies as well to incorporate intoo the classroom like the mimio. They have clickers that correspond with the smartboard and now a smart table. The smart table consists of the electronic whiteboard on a table that wheels around and can be used as a station like item isnteada of teaching whole group.
All in all they are all the same boards with different names but it is interesting to see how the companies took the diea of the elctronic whitebaord and incorporated different areas within learning to make the electronic learning most useful as possible..
(side note: if you don't know what a clicker is when I was talking about it above within this blog post go to Lindsay Roger's Blog it is her topic right now and goes more into depth about what they are and has interesting articles about clickers as well)

Hi Leah:
ReplyDeleteThank you for this great summary blog posting about the various types of electronic whiteboards. In terms of the three selections, the Mimio seemed the most interesting. I went to the Mimio website and saw that they offer a lot of technical support and training resources for Mimio users. Also, I tried to find out the cost/pricing for this product online, but the website required that I submit contact information which I did not want to do.
I agree with Aja i thought the mimio board seemed the most interesting. I had not heard of this before and it seems like it would be very helpful for the teacher. My favorite part is the pen that will save the notes you write.
ReplyDeletehellooooo Leah,
ReplyDeleteI never used any whiteboard before. But the technology we are going to use in the collaborative project is smartboard. Thanks for the information you provided. I really think wihite board is able to offer a better way for teachers to interact with their students.
I like Aja am wondering about the cost comparison of these 3 types or even some of the components that can be added to preexisting white boards. Grants are a great source to fund products like this and the bext thing about using grants are that you dont typically have to give them back.
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of the MimioCapture™ ink recording system and the camera device. I, too, wonder about the costs. When school districts struggle to provide copy paper and pens, I really wonder about all these fancy IWB add-ons. I think that grants might be the best way to fund these, but I wonder if grants would support the fancy add-ons.
ReplyDeleteLeah,
ReplyDeleteMimio boards are my favorite! They combine all of the essential tools when trying to teach effectively. I love the idea of the notepad that you can take with you and write when you walk around the classroom, because this allows you to see what your students are doing without interrupting the flow of the lesson. This could also come in handy for students who have a hard time getting around the classroom because they are still able to write their responses without having to go up to the board. I look forward to your blogs every week!
Leah,
ReplyDeleteMimio's sounds great. I haven't ever used one or even been in a building that had one. I enjoyed browsing through the website and looking at the different tools that seem to make it unique. Thanks for these brief summaries!
